Singer-songwriter revolutionary Joni Mitchell has been named the 2022 MusiCares Person of the Year.

Mitchell and her music will be the subject of a tribute gala at the Los Angeles Convention Center in January. Proceeds from the GRAMMY week event will support the MusiCares Foundation, which provides essential health and welfare services to musicians in need.

"I'm honored to be chosen as Person of the Year by this great charity," said Mitchell in a statement. "I look forward to being part of this gala that will help MusiCares continue their inspired work in providing a support system for those in need."

The slate of performers celebrating Mitchell at the gala has not yet been announced. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Mitchell's 1971 masterpiece, Blue.

The eight-time GRAMMY Award winner and 16-time GRAMMY Award nominee is being honored "not only for her iconic music and lyrics, but for her trailblazing spirit and the inspiration she's brought to so many artists," said MusiCares Executive Director Laura Segura.

MusiCares has distributed at least $24 million to more than 30,000 clients since March 2020 and more than $93 million since its inception in 1989.
