Slime, Battleship, and Trivial Pursuit have been inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame, joining the ranks of iconic playthings recognized for their enduring impact on creative play. The Hall of Fame, located at The Strong National Museum of Play, celebrates toys that have captured the imaginations of children and adults alike over generations.
The induction ceremony took place on Thursday (November 6), where these beloved toys were honored. Slime, known for its gooey and stretchy texture, has become a staple in playrooms and classrooms, often homemade by children and parents alike. Battleship, a classic strategy game, has its roots in early war games and continues to be a favorite for its engaging gameplay. Trivial Pursuit, famous for its challenging questions, has been a staple of family game nights for over four decades.
Each year, the National Toy Hall of Fame selects new inductees from thousands of nominations submitted online. The finalists are chosen by a combination of public voting and a panel of experts. This year, the selection included a mix of traditional games and nontraditional toys, showcasing the diverse nature of play.
The final selections were made after a playful debate among judges and the public, highlighting the lasting impact these toys have had on society.
Christopher Bensch, vice president for collections and chief curator at The Strong Museum, noted the significance of the toys, stating, "These toys have personal and cultural relevance for us all."
The National Toy Hall of Fame, established in 1998, continues to honor toys that have inspired generations, with The Strong Museum showcasing both new and historic versions of these classic playthings.
